スウィンバーン工科大学は1908年にジョージ・スウィンバーンによってメルボルン東部のホーソンに設立され、1992年に大学として認可された公立大学である。QS世界大学ランキング2025年版では世界285位にランクインしている。最大の特徴は天文学と天体物理学の分野での世界的な研究実績で、重力波の検出に貢献したLIGOプロジェクトへの参加が知られている。デザインとイノベーションの分野でも高い評判を持ち、QSランキングのアート・デザイン部門で世界トップ50にランクインしている。産業界との連携を重視しており、全学部で業界実習を学位に組み込んだプログラムを提供している点が他大学との差別化ポイントである。サーティフィケートから博士号まで幅広いレベルのプログラムを提供しており、職業教育から研究まで一貫したパスウェイが整備されている。留学生向けの奨学金としてSwinburne International Excellence Scholarshipがあり、授業料の最大75%が免除される。ホーソンキャンパスはメルボルンCBDから電車で約15分の便利な場所に位置し、周辺にはカフェやレストランが集まる活気あるエリアである。天文学やデザインに興味がある人、産業界との接点を重視する人に向いた大学である。
