大学の概要

1995年にブリティッシュコロンビア州の州法で設立された公立大学、ロイヤルローズ大学です。前身は1940年から続いた士官養成校ロイヤルローズ軍事大学で、ビクトリア近郊コルウッドのキャンパスは国定史跡ハトリーパークそのもの、1908年築の城館ハトリー城は映画「X-MEN」のロケ地として知られています。設立法で「応用・専門分野のプログラムのみを提供する」と役割を定められた特別目的大学であり、研究型総合大学とは土俵が異なります。核となるのはオンライン学習と1〜3週間のキャンパス集中滞在を組み合わせるブレンド型モデルで、仕事を辞めずに学位を取得できる設計です。分野は環境・サステナビリティ、リーダーシップ、ビジネス、国際コミュニケーション、グローバル観光など実務直結型に絞られています。高校卒業後すぐに入学できるかという問いには、グローバル観光マネジメントなどの学部課程なら直接出願が可能と答えられます。一方で大学院の多くは成績に加えて実務・リーダーシップ経験を評価するため、難易度は経験を語れるかどうかに左右されます。留学生を対象とした入学奨学金があり、学業成績を軸に選考されます。修了生の多くが在職のまま学び、昇進や転職につなげており、キャリアの停滞を打開したい社会人に向く大学です。太平洋を望む森と庭園の中で集中滞在を挟みながら学ぶ経験には、若さで競う留学とは別の価値があります。
