サザンクロス大学は1994年に設立されたニューサウスウェールズ州北部の公立大学で、リズモア、コフスハーバー、ゴールドコーストの3キャンパスを展開している。THE世界大学ランキング2024年版では世界501-600位に位置している。最大の特徴は森林科学と海洋科学の分野での研究実績で、亜熱帯の豊かな自然環境を活用した環境研究が高い評判を持つ。National Marine Science Centreをコフスハーバーに運営しており、海洋生態系の研究拠点として重要な役割を果たしている。またオーストラリアで最も先進的な先住民族研究プログラムの一つであるGnibi College of Indigenous Australian Peoplesを有し、先住民教育に深くコミットしている。観光学やホスピタリティの分野でもゴールドコーストという立地を活かした実践的なプログラムが人気である。留学生向けの奨学金としてInternational Student Scholarshipがあり、授業料の最大15%が免除される。リズモアはバイロンベイから車で約30分の場所に位置し、オーストラリアのカウンターカルチャーの中心地として知られるリラックスした雰囲気の街である。自然環境の中で海洋科学や環境学を学びたい人、リゾート地で観光業のキャリアを目指す人に適した大学といえるだろう。
