ジェームズクック大学（JCU）は1970年にクイーンズランド州タウンズビルに設立された公立研究大学で、熱帯研究の分野で世界をリードする存在である。QS世界大学ランキング2025年版では世界415位に位置しているが、海洋・淡水生物学ではオーストラリア国内1位、世界でもトップクラスの評判を持つ。グレートバリアリーフに最も近い大学として、サンゴ礁生態系や熱帯環境の研究で世界的に比類のない立地条件を有する。ARC Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studiesの本部が同大学に置かれており、サンゴ礁研究者を世界中から集めている。タウンズビルとケアンズの2キャンパスに加え、シンガポールにも海外キャンパスを持つ。獣医学部はオーストラリアで3校しかない認定プログラムの一つであり、熱帯地域特有の動物医療を学べる。留学生向けの奨学金としてJCU International Excellence Scholarshipがあり、授業料の最大25%が免除される。タウンズビルは年間300日以上の晴天に恵まれた熱帯都市で、ダイビングやシュノーケリングなどマリンスポーツが日常的に楽しめる。海洋生物学や熱帯環境科学を志す学生にとって、JCUは世界で最も恵まれた学びの場の一つである。
