大学の概要

バンクーバーアイランド大学（VIU）は、カナダ・ブリティッシュコロンビア州のバンクーバー島にある都市ナナイモに本部を置く公立大学です。溶接や調理といった職業訓練（トレード）から学士・修士まで100以上のプログラムを一つのキャンパスで学べる点が最大の特徴で、前身は1969年設立のマラスパイナ・カレッジ、2008年に大学へ昇格しました。VIUを象徴するのが、島という立地を生かした水産・海洋研究です。ナナイモから北西へ車で約1時間のディープベイ海洋フィールドステーションには連邦認可の貝類ふ化場があり、太平洋カキやホタテの遺伝的選抜プログラムを地元の養殖業者と共同で進めています。海洋・水産養殖のほか、観光、林業、看護、先住民研究など、地域産業と結びついた実学志向の分野に強みを持ちます。本部キャンパスはスヌネイムクス・ファーストネーションの伝統的領域にあり、初代総長に先住民のショーン・アトレオ氏を迎えるなど、先住民との連携を大切にしています。VIUはU15（カナダの研究15大学連合）には属さず、Maclean'sの全国ランキングにも登場しない、教育と地域貢献を重視する中規模大学です。約13,000人の学生のうち1,600人以上が85か国から集まる留学生で、少人数クラスで教員が学生の名前を覚える距離の近さを掲げています。研究大学の知名度よりも、手を動かしながら学び、水産養殖や観光といった島の基幹産業につながる実践的なスキルを身につけたい人に向いた大学です。多様な学習段階の学生を受け入れる方針のため、合格の見込みは必要な英語力と専攻ごとの出願条件で判断してください。留学生向けの奨学金も用意されているので、条件と締切を出願前に確認しておくと安心です。
