大学の概要

1959年に設立された、オンタリオ州ウォータールーの州立大学です。戦後の産業界が求める技術者を育てる目的で生まれた経緯があり、その発想は今日のコーオプ（有給就労実習）制度に受け継がれています。大学公式によれば北米最大規模のコーオプで、70か国以上・8,000社を超える雇用主のネットワークを持ちます。学生は4か月の学修と4か月のフルタイム就労を交互に繰り返し、多くのプログラムで4〜6回の就労期間を経るため卒業までは通常5年かかりますが、給与を得ながら実務経験を積める設計で、留学生も対象になります。就職・進路を重視するなら、この点が最大の判断材料になります。

学術面の中核は数学・計算機科学・工学です。1967年に北米で初めて数学部（Faculty of Mathematics）を独立設置した大学と説明されており、チェリトン計算機科学部の卒業生は北米のテック企業に多数採用されています。学内の起業支援拠点ヴェロシティからも複数の企業が育っており、世界大学ランキングでもカナダ国内の上位グループに入ります。

キャンパスはトロントから西へ車で1時間半ほどの中規模都市にあり、周辺にはテック企業や研究機関が集積する「カナダのテックコリドー」と呼ばれる地域が広がっています。

コーオプ枠は原則として入学時点で決まりますが、学部によっては入学後に選抜を受けて加わる道もあります。ただし後から加わると就労期間が1回減るなど条件が変わるため、志望プログラムの選抜方式を出願前に把握しておく必要があります。ソフトウェアやAI、金融工学などを、学びながら実務で試したい人に向いた大学です。
