大学の概要

ビクトリア大学は、1976年にカナダ西部で初めてコーオプ教育（co-op、専攻の学修と有給就労を交互に重ねる制度）を導入した大学です。化学と物理の2学科・58件の配置で始めたこの仕組みは、開設以来10万9千件を超える学生就労配置へと広がり、大学の看板になっています。前身は1903年に設立され当初マギル大学と提携したビクトリアカレッジで、1963年に独立した大学となりました。

大学が運営するOcean Networks Canadaは、バンクーバー島沖の海底に約800kmの光ファイバーケーブルを張り巡らせた観測ネットワークNEPTUNEを通じ、地震・津波・深海生態系のデータを24時間収集しています。この海洋研究の蓄積を背景に、ビクトリア大学は海洋学と大気科学でカナダ首位（2025年上海ランキング）、気候変動対策や持続可能性の分野でも世界的な評価を得ています。評判の面では、Maclean's 2026の総合大学部門（博士課程が限られる中規模研究大学の区分）でサイモンフレーザー大学に次ぐ第2位に入り、QS世界大学ランキング2026では358位に位置します。カナダの研究大学連合U15には属しませんが、専門分野での存在感は明確です。入学の合否基準は分野によって幅がありますが、成績優秀者には毎年350万ドル超の入学奨学金が用意され、条件を満たせば4年間更新されます。

就職・進路の面では、co-opで在学中から有給の実務経験を積める点が最大の強みで、卒業後のキャリアに直結します。ビクトリアはブリティッシュコロンビア州の州都で、海に囲まれた温暖な西海岸の街です。海洋や環境の研究に関心があり、教室の外で経験を積みながら学びたい人に向く大学です。
