大学の概要

フレーザーバレー大学（University of the Fraser Valley、UFV）は、バンクーバー東方の農業地帯フレーザーバレーに位置し、本部をアボッツフォードに置く公立大学です。1974年に地域の職業・実学教育を担う Fraser Valley College として発足し、1991年に学位授与権を持つ大学カレッジへ、2008年にはブリティッシュコロンビア州から正式な大学として認可され、この地域で初の大学となりました。

UFVは大学院よりも学部教育に軸足を置くティーチング型の大学で、カナダの Maclean's 誌でも学部中心（primarily undergraduate）カテゴリに分類されます。少人数での実践的な学びを特色とし、農業地帯という立地を活かした農業教育に力を入れているのが特徴です。チリワックのキャンパスには2014年に Agriculture Centre of Excellence を開設し、健康科学やトレード（技能職）教育の拠点にもなっています。

学問面では、経営学、数学、心理学、英語などと並び、犯罪学・刑事司法（criminology）が最も活発な学科の一つに数えられます。2005年には連邦政府による刑事司法分野の研究チェアが設置され、この分野の評判を支えています。UFVはインドのチャンディーガルにも分校を運営しており、現地で学んだ後にカナダ本校へ編入できるパスウェイ課程を提供している点は、カナダの大学では珍しい取り組みです。奨学金は成績優秀者向けの給付型を中心に用意され、入学要件は総合大学として標準的な水準です。地域に根ざした実学と少人数教育を重視し、農業・刑事司法・ビジネスといった実務志向の分野を、落ち着いた環境でじっくり学びたい人に向いた大学です。
