大学の概要

1848年にバイタウン・カレッジとして始まり、1866年に大学となったオタワ大学は、英語とフランス語の二言語で運営され、大学自身は世界最大の英仏バイリンガル大学だと説明しています。学生は同じ学位を英語でもフランス語でも履修でき、フランス語を伸ばしたい人には80を超える学部プログラムで提供されるフレンチ・イマージョン課程があります。専門科目をフランス語で受けながら語学サポートを受けられる仕組みで、毎学期フランス語科目を一定単位以上履修するなどの条件を満たすと、申請不要で自動的に給付される返済不要の奨学金（French Studies Bursary）が支給されます。

キャンパスは首都オタワの中心部、リドー運河を挟んで官庁街と隣り合うサンディヒル地区にあり、連邦議会や政府機関、大使館が徒歩圏です。この立地を生かし、コモンロー（英米法）と大陸法の二系統を併せ持つ法学部、政治学・公共政策、医学系の研究が中心的な役割を担っています。なお大陸法の課程はフランス語で開講されます。研究集約型大学が集まるU15グループの一員で、カナダ国内の研究大学としても上位に位置づけられます。

学生の四分の一ほどが世界各国からの留学生で、英語圏とフランス語圏が日常的に交わる環境です。英語に加えてフランス語も身につけたい人、政策や国際関係に関心があり、首都でのインターンを通じて現場を見たい人に向いています。
