大学の概要

マニトバ大学は、1877年にカナダ西部で最初に設立された大学です。現在世界中で食用油として使われるキャノーラは、1970年代に同大学の育種学者ボールドゥル・ステファンソンが低エルカ酸の菜種を開発したことに端を発しており、農学や食品科学はマニトバ大学が長く培ってきた強みとなっています。設立当初は複数のカレッジが連合する形をとり、以来プレーリー地方の高等教育の中心として発展してきました。

研究面では、カナダを代表する研究型大学15校で構成されるU15グループに加盟しています。新生児溶血性疾患（Rh式血液型不適合）の治療法確立にも貢献し、約100名のローズ奨学生を輩出してきた実績はカナダ西部の大学の中で最多です。国際的な評価ではQS世界大学ランキング2026年版でおよそ640位台に位置づけられ、24の学部を通じて幅広い分野の学位課程を提供しています。入学の難易度は学部によって差があり、健康科学や工学など人気分野では相対的に高い水準が求められます。奨学金は成績優秀者向けや研究支援など複数の制度が整えられています。

キャンパスは、州都ウィニペグ郊外に広がるフォートギャリーを中心に、市中心部の医学系バナタインなどで構成されます。工学系のプライス工学部はカナダ西部で最も歴史のある工学教育機関です。キャノーラ発祥の大学として農学のイメージが強いものの、実際には農業・環境科学に加え健康科学や工学まで研究基盤が広い総合大学です。研究に裏打ちされた実学志向の学びを求める人や、州最大の専門人材の輩出源として卒業後の進路をマニトバ州やカナダ国内に築きたい人に向いています。
