大学の概要
モントリオール大学（Université de Montréal）は1878年に設立された、フランス語で教育を行うカナダ有数の研究大学です。学部課程の授業言語は原則としてフランス語であり、留学生が学部に進学するにはフランス語の運用能力が求められます。一方で大学院では、Arts and MusicやHealth Sciencesなど31のプログラムが英語話者に開かれており、研究段階ではバイリンガルな環境で学べる余地があります。この「フランス語圏の総合研究大学」という性格が、英語圏のカナダの大学との最大の違いです。
同大学はカナダの主要研究大学15校で構成されるU15グループの一員であり、医学・生命科学といったbiomedical分野に長い伝統を持ちます。近年はYoshua Bengioが共同設立した深層学習研究所Milaを擁し、人工知能研究の世界的拠点としての存在感を高めています。提携校として経営大学院のHEC Montréalと工学系のPolytechnique Montréalを抱え、社会科学から工学まで幅広い分野をカバーしています。QS World University Rankings 2026では世界168位、カナダ国内では7位に位置づけられています。
キャンパスはモンレアルの象徴であるMount Royalの北側、Côte-des-Neiges地区に広がり、1943年にダウンタウンから移転した歴史ある拠点です。多文化都市モンレアルの中心に近く、フランス語と英語が日常的に交わる環境で学生生活を送れます。学生数は提携校を含めて約67,000人にのぼり、カナダでも屈指の規模です。費用面では、留学生向けにUdeM Exemption Scholarshipが用意されており、出願時の成績に基づいて自動的に評価されます。博士課程では留学生に課される追加授業料が全額免除され、ケベック州民と同水準の授業料で学べる点が大きな魅力です。フランス語で専門を究めたい人、あるいはAIや医学・生命科学の研究に大学院から取り組みたい人にとって、有力な選択肢となる大学です。
