大学の概要
サイモンフレーザー大学は、1965年にカナダ・ブリティッシュコロンビア州バーナビー市の山頂に開学した公立大学で、建築家アーサー・エリクソンが設計コンペで勝ち取った一体的なコンクリート造キャンパスで知られます。名称は毛皮交易商で探検家のサイモン・フレーザーに由来し、開学初日の1965年9月9日に2,500人の学生を迎えました。標高365メートルの主要キャンパスはバンクーバー中心部から約15キロに位置し、バーナビー、ダウンタウンのバンクーバー、サレーの3キャンパス体制で、一年を通じた三学期制と学際的な教育を特徴としています。
SFUを語るうえで欠かせないのが、1975年にコンピューティングサイエンス学科で始まった協同教育（Co-op）です。現在は学部54・大学院10のプログラムに広がり、年間およそ4,000件の有給就業ターム（work term）を提供します。学生は学期と就業を交互に行い、学部生は3回以上を修了すると学位に協同教育の称号が付きます。実務経験を積みながら卒業後の進路を築きたい人にとって、これがSFU最大の魅力です。
評価の面では、SFUはMaclean'sの総合（Comprehensive）大学部門で過去18年のうち17年首位を占めています。医学部併設の研究型大学が集うU15グループには属しませんが、研究活動は活発で、カナダ有数の性能を持つ学術用スーパーコンピューター「Fir」を擁します。QS世界大学ランキングでは300番台に位置します。入学選考は競争的で、求められる成績水準は学部・分野によって異なり、成績優秀者向けの入学奨学金も設けられています。米国外で唯一NCAAに加盟する運動部「レッドリーフス」を持つ点も個性的で、山頂の落ち着いた環境で実務経験を重ねながら学びたい人、分野を横断して学びたい人に向いた大学です。
