大学の概要
レイクヘッド大学は、1946年に鉱業と林業の人材育成を目的として設立された技術専門学校を前身とし、1965年に総合大学となったオンタリオ州の公立大学です。トロントから北へ大きく離れたサンダーベイに本部を置き、州中部のオリリアにも2006年開設のキャンパスを構えます。看板は天然資源管理・林業・環境分野で、この地域性を土台に据えた点が大学全体の性格を決めています。2013年開設のボラ・ラスキン法学部は、理論と実務訓練を3年間通して融合させる統合実務カリキュラム（Integrated Practice Curriculum）を導入し、卒業生がオンタリオ州弁護士会の必須研修（articling）を経ずに司法試験へ進める、カナダでも数少ない法学部です。同学部は先住民法、天然資源・環境法、地方での単独開業を三本柱に掲げ、真実和解委員会の勧告に先んじて先住民法を必修化しました。ローレンシャン大学と共同で2005年に北オンタリオ医学部（NOSM）を創設した経緯も、地域医療への関与を物語ります。評価面では、マクリーン誌の学部中心大学（primarily undergraduate）部門でオンタリオ州首位に立ち、学生への給付や少人数教育で全国上位に評価されています。研究規模で競うU15には属さず、学部教育と面倒見の良さを軸に据える大学です。留学生向けの手厚い入学奨学金を用意する一方、専門職に直結する実務型教育を重んじるため、法曹・環境・資源といった分野で現場に強い学びを求める人に向いています。
