大学の概要
カールトン大学は、1942年に大恐慌と戦争の影響下にあったオタワの勤労青年や復員兵へ夜間教育を届けるために設立された、非宗教系の総合大学です。1945年に始まったジャーナリズム課程はカナダで最も歴史ある4年制プログラムであり、公共政策や国際関係を束ねる公共政策学部（Faculty of Public Affairs）とともに同大学の看板を形づくっています。カナダの首都オタワに立地し、連邦政府機関や国際機関が集まる土地柄を生かして、国際関係を専門とするノーマン・パターソン国際関係大学院はカナダ外務省や国防省などでのコープ（有給就業実習）配置を数多く実現し、学びと政策の現場を直結させています。
工学では1988年にカナダ初の航空宇宙工学の学士課程を設け、空力・推進、機体構造、電子システム、宇宙システム設計の4専攻を擁する国内屈指の規模を保っています。評判の面では、マクリーンズ誌2025年版の総合大学部門でカナダ4位・オンタリオ州2位に位置し、社会科学・人文学の研究資金では国内首位に立ちます。U15には属しませんが、研究志向の大学として着実に評価を高めてきました。奨学金は成績優秀者向けの入学時給付を中心に整備されています。
リドー運河沿いのキャンパスは、カナダで最も長い約5キロの地下トンネルで各棟が結ばれ、厳冬期も屋内で移動できます。ジャーナリズムや国際関係、公共政策を志し、首都で政府機関に近い環境で実務経験を積みたい人、あるいは航空宇宙工学を本格的に学びたい人に向く大学です。
