大学の概要
1827年に King's College として設立され、1850年に教会から離れて現在の名称になった、カナダで最も古い歴史を持つ大学の一つです。オックスフォードやケンブリッジに似たカレッジ制を採用しており、学部生は入学時に University College、Victoria、Trinity、St. Michael's などのカレッジのいずれかに所属します。寮生活や少人数の学習支援、カレッジ独自の奨学金はこの単位で運営されるため、10万人規模の巨大な大学でありながら、日々の居場所は小さく保たれる仕組みになっています。
インスリンの発見、幹細胞の発見、人工心臓ペースメーカーの開発といった医学史に残る成果がこの大学から生まれました。トロント市内の教育病院群と組んだ医学・生命科学は現在も看板分野で、研究資金の規模はカナダの大学で最大です。主要な世界ランキングでも国内首位に位置づけられることが多く、評判の面で不安の少ない選択肢です。
キャンパスは、ゴシック様式の建物が並ぶダウンタウンの St. George を中心に、郊外の Mississauga と Scarborough の3か所に分かれています。出願は大学単位ではなく学部・プログラム単位で行うため、難易度も志望プログラムごとに見る必要があります。
留学生には、授業料と寮費までを4年間支える Lester B. Pearson International Scholarship があり、応募には在籍高校からの推薦が必要です。ただし採用は毎年ごく少数のため、学部別の入学奨学金と併せて公式ページで確認しておくことをおすすめします。手厚く面倒を見てもらうより、自分から機会を取りに行きたい人、大学院や研究の道まで見据えて学びたい人に向いています。
