大学の概要

1908年、州首相 Alexander Rutherford と初代学長 Henry Marshall Tory によってエドモントンに設立された州立の研究大学で、カナダの主要研究大学が集まる U15 の一員です。強化学習（reinforcement learning）研究の世界的拠点として知られ、この分野を切り開いた Richard Sutton 教授が学内に RLAI ラボを立ち上げ、国家AI戦略の3拠点の一つ Amii（Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute）と連携する体制ができています。Sutton 教授は、この分野を共に築いた Andrew Barto 教授とともに、計算機科学で最高の栄誉とされるチューリング賞を共同受賞しています。

医学系も強く、C型肝炎ウイルスの発見でノーベル生理学・医学賞を受けた Michael Houghton が学内のウイルス学研究所に籍を置いています。石油・天然ガス産業が集積する州にあるため、エネルギーや資源分野の工学研究は産業界との距離が近く、卒業後の進路としてもこれらの産業が現実的な選択肢に入ります。

キャンパスは North Saskatchewan 川の渓谷に面した North Campus が中心で、南東のカムローズには小規模なリベラルアーツ課程の Augustana キャンパス、マニトバ州より西では唯一のフランス語大学キャンパスである Campus Saint-Jean もあります。

AI、工学、エネルギー、医学のいずれかで研究に踏み込みたい人に向いています。学内奨学金はありますが留学生が対象になる条件は限られるため、出願前に対象範囲と申請時期を確かめておくと安全です。
