大学の概要
1908年の州法で設置が決まり、マギル大学の分校を前身として1915年に独立したのがブリティッシュコロンビア大学です。バンクーバー本校はダウンタウンから西に約10km、太平洋に突き出したポイントグレイ半島にあり、Pacific Spirit Regional Park の森と海岸線に囲まれた広大な敷地を持ちます。
キャンパス内には、カナダの国立素粒子・原子核物理研究所である TRIUMF が置かれ、世界最大級のサイクロトロンが稼働しています。先住民の芸術資料で知られる人類学博物館や、農学・食料研究の実習地である UBC Farm も学内にあり、研究施設がそのまま学びの現場になっているのが特徴です。2005年に開設されたケロウナのオカナガン・キャンパスもあり、小規模な環境で学びたい学生の受け皿になっています。
世界ランキングでは総合40位前後の常連で、カナダを代表する研究大学の一つとして扱われています。学生のおよそ4分の1が留学生で、国際的な環境は入学時点から整っています。留学生向けには International Major Entrance Scholarship や Outstanding International Student Award といった成績重視の入学奨学金があり、期限内に出願すれば自動的に選考対象になります。経済的な事情も加味する International Scholars Program も用意されていますが、条件が細かいので公式で確認してください。
森と海に隣接しながら大都市にも近く、研究資源も豊富です。理系や環境分野を志し、屋外での活動も生活に組み込みたい人に向いています。専攻ごとの進路は幅があるため、公式が公開する実習・co-op 制度の有無を見ておくと計画を立てやすくなります。
