大学の概要

マクマスター大学は、1969年に医学部が世界で初めて問題解決型学習（Problem-Based Learning、PBL）を導入したことで知られる、カナダ・オンタリオ州ハミルトンの研究型大学です。講義中心の受動的な医学教育を、症例をもとに学生が自ら調べて学ぶ方式へ転換した先駆けであり、この手法は現在アメリカの医学部の8割以上に広がっています。問題解決型学習とは、教員が答えを与えるのではなく、学生が小グループで実際の症例に取り組みながら必要な知識を自分で身につけていく教育方式です。

大学自体は1887年に設立され、1930年に現在のハミルトンへ移転しました。「根拠に基づく医療（Evidence-Based Medicine、EBM）」という概念も同大学から生まれ、1968年にデイヴィッド・サケットがカナダ初の臨床疫学プログラムを立ち上げ、1991年にゴードン・ガイアットがこの言葉を提唱しました。こうした背景から、健康科学部は研究の質でカナダ有数の評価を受けています。マクマスターは研究集約型大学の連合U15に属し、Maclean's誌2026年の医学博士系ランキングでカナダ5位、QS世界大学ランキング2026では世界173位に位置します。分野別ではQSの医学が世界31位に入るなど、健康・生命科学系で特に高い評価を得ています。

キャンパスはハミルトン市街の西、クーツ・パラダイスの湿地帯と王立植物園に隣接する緑豊かな環境にあり、約3万7千人が学びます。研究施設としては、英連邦最大級の研究用原子炉であるマクマスター原子炉を有します。入学時の成績優秀者を対象とした奨学金制度が整えられており、医療・製薬・バイオテクノロジーをはじめとする分野で、研究職や大学院進学への進路が開けています。医学や健康科学を軸に、暗記よりも思考と探究を重視する学びを求める人に向いた大学です。
